The updated course for 2023-24 will launch by November 20, 2023. If you purchase the opioid course after November 1, you will be enrolled in the new course and notified when it launches.
This course satisfies the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) mandate which states that beginning with the licensing period that begins after January 1, 2014, as a condition precedent for license renewal, each controlled substance prescriber shall complete at least 3.5 continuing education hours per licensing period. The 3 hours of the core curriculum includes educational content covering the following:
- the scope of the controlled substance abuse problem in Utah and the nation,
- all elements of the FDA Blueprint for Prescriber Education under the FDA’s Extended-Release and Long-Acting Opioid Analgesics Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy, as published July 9, 2012, or as it may be subsequently revised,
- the national and Utah-specific resources available to prescribers to assist in appropriate controlled substance and opioid prescribing,
- patient record documentation for controlled substance and opioid prescribing, and
- office policies, procedures, and implementation
Learners will need to pick at a minimum an additional half-hour of electives to satisfy the 3.5-hour requirement. Learners have the opportunity to earn a maximum of 8.00 hours of continuing education if all electives are taken.
This current course satisfies at least 3.5 hours of continuing education for controlled substance prescribers, except dentists who shall complete at least 2 hours to satisfy the DOPL requirements. This controlled substance prescribing class satisfies the division’s requirements for the continuing education required for the renewal of the controlled substance prescriber’s respective license type, is delivered by an accredited continuing education provider recognized by the division as offering continuing education appropriate for the controlled substance prescriber’s respective license type, and include a post-course knowledge assessment.
In addition, an M.D. or D.O. completing continuing professional education hours will complete those hours in classes that qualify for the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award Category 1 credit. All others (non-M.D. or D.O.s) could also seek continuing education credits in accordance with your organizations’ requirements. We are also offering maintenance of certificate Part II credits for the following boards: American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, American Board of Pathology, American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Pediatrics, and American Board of Anesthesiology. Please ensure you provide the necessary credentials upon registration to receive these credits.
Please note: A controlled substance prescriber who, on or after July 1, 2017, obtains a waiver to treat opioid dependency with narcotic medications, in accordance with the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000, 21 U.S.C. Sec. 823 et seq., may use the waiver to satisfy the 3.5 hours of the continuing education requirement for two consecutive licensing periods. Therefore this course is not intended for those prescribers
Requirements
Before proceeding with renewal, the following requirements must be met:
Physicians: Complete the required hours of CE as indicated in R156-67-304 (40 hours during each 2-year licensure cycle)
Controlled Substance: Complete the required hours of CE as indicated in 58-37-6.5 A minimum of 3.5 hours must be completed. The core 2.5-hour course consists of units 1-6, with an additional hour coming from at least one of the six elective courses.
Complete at least ONE of the online suicide prevention trainings on DOPL website (NEW for this cycle)

- Collaborative Safety Planning (0.5 credit)
- CALM-Utah (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means) (1 credit)
Upcoming: Beginning with the licensing period that begins after January 1, 2024, as a condition precedent for license renewal, each controlled substance prescriber shall complete at least 3.5 continuing education hours in an SBIRT-training class (currently available on our Substance Education Institute website)
